Beginning Four-Harness Weaving

The beginning student will learn basic weaving theory and techniques. No previous weaving experience is necessary. Topics covered will include designing and planning a project, winding a warp, threading the loom, pattern drawdowns, and fulling. During the lessons the student will begin by weaving a twill sampler and go onto a project of their choosing. Four-harness table looms are provided. There is a materials fee of $20 for the learning notebook and sampler yarns. The cost for materials for individual project is additional, based on the yarns chosen.
Independent Weaving

Learn new techniques, do a group study project or work on your own project. You will have access to expert guidance, design assistance, and an extensive reference library of weaving books, magazines, and weaving samples. Four and Eight harness table and floor looms are provided depending on the project.

Rigid Heddle Weaving

Rigid heddle looms produce plain weave cloth on a fun and portable loom. Students will begin by learning how to design a scarf, or set of placemats, or table runner. Lessons will focus on winding the warp, threading the loom, and begin weaving. More advanced students can study how to create lace and surface textures on the rigid heddle loom. Loom can be provided or you may use your own loom.

SUMMER LECTURE SERIES

If you would like to learn or refresh your knowledge of the topic(s) listed below, please come join us. The cost for these lectures are included in the monthly studio fee. If you have not signed up for studio time and would like to attend the cost is $20 per lecture. Please note that I am NOT available for other help and teaching during lecture times.

Special Workshop

Patricia Morton – “Weave a Trivet with Plants”
on Sunday, October 17; 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM
$65 plus materials; class limit 8.

Weaving with plants is an ancient craft. This class describes how to harvest, prepare, and weave using common garden plants as weft materials. Although plant stems are most often used for off-loom weaving, you will learn how to create beautiful, naturally interesting textiles right on your loom!

Using both lecture and hands-on time, Patricia will describe the techniques for both weaving and sewing and show many examples. The handout will allow you to use these techniques on your own.

You will bring a loom pre-warped with cotton, per directions that will be sent out ahead of the class. The warp is simple to put on a rigid heddle, 2H or 4H table or floor loom. You will weave the daffodil stems or iris leaves provided by the instructor.

After lunch break, you will sew a trivet. If you have a sewing machine, please bring it; otherwise, you can use the ones in the studio. Interfacing, lining and trim fabrics will be provided by the instructor (for an additional fee).

Patricia Morton has been weaving for 19 years. Primarily self-taught, she has studied at numerous workshops and weaving conferences. Her interests are varied and she has exhibited at the New England Weaver’s Seminar (NEWS). The Weavers’ Guild of Boston (WGB) and the New Hampshire Weaver’s Guild (NHWG). Through her teaching and demonstrating, she has introduced numerous adults and children to weaving. She is the co-owner of Treeditions, a weaving and weaving tools company.
